Rick and Morty is a wildly popular American adult animated science-fiction show brought to the screen by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. It follows an alcoholic, narcissistic mad-scientist genius: Rick, and his impressionable, naive, and insecure grandson: Morty. The show documents that intergalactic travels as they tear around the universe causing trouble on their very many “quests”.
But, who is the best character in the Rick and Morty franchise? Which is the highest-rated episode of all time? And will they ever make another season? Read on if you’d like to learn more.
Who is the best character in Rick and Morty?
So, who is the best character in Rick and Morty? It’s a difficult question to answer when there are so many excellent and lovable characters in the franchise, however, it’s fair to say that Rick Sanchez is the favourite for most people.
Rich Sanchez makes you angry, heartbroken, disgusted, impressed, and entertained, all at once! He is brave, witty, ingenious, and wicked! All in all, he makes for a very entertaining protagonist.
- Morty Smith: as far as 14-year-olds’ go, Morty is a decent young chap. He’s seen more than the average teenager and is constantly put through the most arduous and seemingly unbearable traumas, without spiralling into a psychopath! His childlike innocence quickly disappears and still manages to maintain his moral sense – thus keeping his grandad on the straight(ish) and narrow.
- Mr Poopybuttohole: Yep…you definitely read that right! Mr Poopybutthole is a genuine character in the Rick and Morty universe and is definitely a fan favourite. “Ooooweeeee!”
- Jerry Smith: Morty’s dad, Jerry Smith is so much fun to watch. He’s a bit of a wet fart and has a tendency to embarrass himself (and his wife), but every now and again he surprises us with a little courage. Either way, he never fails to make you laugh (at him).
- Birdperson: Birdperson is Rick’s closest friend and one of the greatest characters in the show, hands down (or in his case, wings). Our favourite Birdperson quote? “Tammy, I was approaching infertility when I met you, but there is still time. I am yours until my death.”
Other great characters from the Rick and Morty universe include:
- Beth Smith
- Unity
- Summer Smith
- Squanchy
- Tammy Gueterman
- Sleepy Gary
- Mr Goldenfort
- Dr Xenon Bloom
- King Flippy Nips
- The Devil
- Gearhead.
What is the highest-rated episode of Rick and Morty?
There are many weird and wonderful episodes in the Rick and Morty series, but the one that is frequently rated highest is: “Total Rickall” (S2E4).
“Total Rickall” is so popular because it effortlessly captures everything that makes Rick and Morty so entertaining. This clever and ridiculously witty episode takes place in the Smith household – which has been infested with an alien parasite.
Their memories are invaded and they end up with hundreds of random characters in their house, from a Hitler / Abe Lincoln parody: Abrodolph Lincoler, Sleepy Gary, a talking fridge, a giant duck with sailor’s arms, a mushroom, a photography raptor, a classic ‘swaggy’ burglar, a smiling sunshine in sunglasses, and so much more – all of which the Smiths are convinced are a part of their family.
As the episode presses on the tone quickly veers away from wild amusement to crushing emotional drama as all of their “memories” are torn to shreds.
All in all, this episode is highly entertaining, thought-provoking, and packed full of laughter.
Perhaps in an alternate universe, somewhere far, far away, Jerry Smith and Sleepy Gary are very happy together. For now, it seems, he’s stuck with Beth and the kids!
Will they ever make another season of Rick and Morty?
As it stands, Rick and Morty is on its mid-season break. Season 6 – Episode 7 is due for release on the 20th of November 2022.
If you are wondering whether or not there will be another season, you’ll be pleased to learn that season 7 is confirmed and in the works.
The creators have confirmed that Rick and Morty is definitely not done yet! Whether season 7 will be the last is anybody’s guess.
Love Rick and Morty? Give Solar Opposites a try
If you are a big Rick and Morty fan and want a similar adult cartoon fix, we recommend checking out Solar Opposites. Created by Mike McMahan and Justin Roiland, Solar Opposites follows a dysfunctional family of aliens who fled their world as it was destroyed in search of a safe harbour. They ended up on earth in the middle of America (surprise surprise), where they cause havoc and settle into life as a “normal” family.
Similar to Rick and Morty, this sci-fi flick is hilarious, witty, and packed full of crude and clever quotes that will never cease to make you laugh.
